ASK AL: ONLYFANS AND HOW IT’S CHANGED THE ADULT INDUSTRY

You asked, I answered!

HAS ONLYFANS CHANGED THE ADULT ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY?

Dear Alix,

Onlyfans is EVERYWHERE. Has the adult entertainment industry changed because of it? Is it changed FOREVER?

Yes.

Onlyfans has been around for a handful of years now, but it’s popped OFF especially in the past year. And yes, it has changed the entire industry, but in a GOOD WAY.

For performers, Onlyfans has been a MASSIVE game changer. It’s shown adult performers that THEY are the ones with the power, NOT the production companies. As in, it’s shown adult performers that THEY can go and produce their own scenes for their fan club members, as well as earn a living, just from providing that incredibly special and intimate experience for their fans.

When I first got into the business, the number of women I knew who were focused mostly on producing their own content (I was one of them, still am) vs. the ones who were just going full force filming for companies was a small percentage compared to a massive one. The way things were then was that your agent would book you for a scene with a studio. You were paid a flat rate for that one scene for the day and that was that. Just like going to the office and working your desk job for the day.

Onlyfans has opened up a LOT of performers’ eyes to the fact that they can produce their OWN scenes (and collaborate with other performers of choice to do so) for their fans. In addition, they can make residual income from those scenes for literally EVER. It’s short-sighted vs. long-term. For me, personally, I’m a big picture person. So I would much rather spend my time producing my own scenes that I can share with my fans however and whenever I want, FOREVER.

For example, I can share a scene on Onlyfans, then post it on a site like Manyvids a year down the road, then post a preview of it onto Pornhub…vs. if I go work for a company, I’m paid a flat rate for that scene and I have zero residuals or ownership of that scene. So a company can pay me $1,500 for a scene and then make $20,000+ off of it (this is common, BTW).

This is why it’s annoying for performers to hear from fans that they’ve “retired” just because they’re no longer going to set and instead are producing their own scenes. From a business perspective, it’s smarter to produce your own scenes. BUT…it’s also fun to collaborate with companies for cool passion projects! And some performers just fucking LOVE being on set.

It’s ALL OK.

In addition, Onlyfans is the shit because it allows performers to give their fans intimate access to their worlds…whether that’s in the form of professionally-produced, high-end scenes, or just pulling out the camera during an intimate moment at home in the bedroom and hitting the record button. It gives fans DIRECT access to their favorite performers. Like, I LOVE more than anything the fact that I can DM directly with my fans and cater to each one’s specific desires. It’s like a combination of a virtual strip club and a Starbucks (lol). Fans can order stuff like custom videos, voice notes, photo sets, etc. all custom-tailored to their personal desires and fantasies.

The sky is literally the limit.

Having that extra income from Onlyfans every month, simply put, gives performers OPTIONS. If you don’t feel like going to film for a studio, you don’t have to. Some performers are strictly producing their own scenes for Onlyfans now and not going to studios anymore because they make way more money from working less (which isn’t a BAD thing. It’s working SMARTER).

PLUS, producing your own content, as a performer, gives you complete control over who you collaborate with, the kind of scene you film, and literally every single detail in between. Which, in my opinion, just makes for a BETTER, more organic and HOT AF scene. It’s that vs. just going to set to work for a company where you’re told who you’re working with, given a script and a scenario to act out, and are paid a flat for the day, zero residuals.

Onlyfans also gives performers freedom to work from wherever the hell they want. In theory, I can literally go anywhere in the world whenever I feel like and still be able to film and take hot pics and vids. 🙂

All in all, Onlyfans just gives performers more options and also allows them to further monetize and expand their businesses. And, even if Onlyfans were to suddenly disappear tomorrow, there are other fan club sites out there, like Fancentro, so this business model is never going to completely go away. That said, yes, I do believe that the adult entertainment industry is forever changed because of it.

IS ONLYFANS AN EASY WAY TO MAKE MONEY?

Dear Alix,

Is it easy for someone to hop on Onlyfans and make a ton of money? It seems like anyone can do it.

This is a wildly common belief but is also absofuckinglutely not true. Let me explain.

IF you are, say, an Instagram model, adult actress, or hell, any sort of person who has a presence on social media and a fuckload of followers ALREADY, then yes, you can do very well on Onlyfans because you’ve already got the audience for it AND you already know that producing content for Onlyfans is a must if you want to do well with it.

For someone who falls into these categories, it’s going to be easier for you than, say, someone who’s starting with a blank slate with no presence or followers because you’re starting from scratch, so you have to build all of that, too.

But even if you DO fall into any of the above-mentioned categories, it’s still a lot of fucking work. In my world what that looks like is DMing with my fans twice daily, taking new photos and vids, filming new scenes, organizing them, sending them out, etc. PLUS filming custom content on an as-needed basis…and it’s doing that every single day. Literally. I don’t think I’ve NOT posted on Onlyfans in like two years. That’s just me. I’m super structured and this is how I run mine. Some people I know are way more chill with it, but I believe in consistency AND delivering for my fans daily. It’s a personal preference.

If, on the other hand, you’re JUST starting off with a blank slate, it’s also going to be a lot of work for you because you’re not only doing stuff like interacting with fans on Onlyfans, taking new pics, vids, filming new scenes..you’re also doing stuff like growing your fan base on social media and promoting your content (which you STILL need to do even if you have a fuckload of followers from my first example) but when you’re first starting off, for a lot of people, it’s challenging because you’re fresh to the scene so you’re trying to find your vibe and figure out what kind of scenes to film, what kind of stuff your fans are into, what YOU’RE into, that kinda thing.

(^^^^I know this was an entirely run on sentence but I don’t care because this is my site, my rules. heh heh.)

All in all, regardless, Onlyfans is a lot of fucking work, but it’s also a LOT of fun! Just like any other business, it’s easy when you love the work you’re doing because it doesn’t feel like work. I can easily go 12 hours of filming back to back to back to back photo sets because I’m having a blast playing dress up knowing that my fans will love what they see.

If you’re thinking about starting an Onlyfans for yourself…or perhaps you’re just curious, and want to learn more about how it all works, I also wrote a FREE e-book that shares how I make 5 figures a month on Onlyfans (which anyone can do if you follow my guidelines).

You can download the ebook HERE.

ASK AL: POLITICAL VIEWS, VEGANISM && FRIENDSHIPS OUTSIDE THE BIZ

You asked, I answered!

ARE OPPOSING POLITICAL VIEWS A DEALBREAKER FOR ME?

Dear Alix,

Would you date someone with opposing political views as you?

Generally speaking, this is really a case-by-case basis type of thing. Right now, however, in this precise point in time, in my country, I would absolutely not date someone with opposing political views as me. To me, this is very black and white. Either you’re for basic human rights and societal progression or you’re…not. Which I absolutely cannot get down with.

There ARE some aspects of political views that I can agree to disagree on…but there will always be some basic values that are important to me and non-negotiable for who I’m dating. Like, if you disagree with women’s rights to their own bodies (aka abortion), it’s not going to work. If you’re team Donald Trump for life, hell to the no. We will not get along. Don’t believe in climate change? We can’t even be friends. lol. Like I always say, I am who I am and it is what it is! 😉

WHAT MADE ME GO VEGAN?

Dear Alix,

What made you go vegan?

So, to start, I was raised vegetarian. I was eating blocks of raw tofu and fresh vegetables and fruit at meals since I could eat solid food. So I started off on a super solid base – I’ve always LOVED healthy, vegan food. I can’t even eat junk food – a nibble here and there, but my body does NOT do well being fed processed junk, so I just don’t bother.

When I was 21 or so, I got really serious about weight lifting/body building, so I started incorporating stuff like grilled chicken and whey protein into my diet, which is how I ate (super clean and restrictive) up until around 3 years ago.

At that point, I went through a MASSIVE shift in my lifestyle and decided to turn my health and wellness up a LOT of notches. For me, that looked like a complete overhaul on my mental health (which is where I got into stuff like spirituality and meditating), getting serious about my sleep, stopped partying regularly, and also decided I was done with animal products.

Why? It’s like one day I woke up and was just super grossed out by the thought of eating anything that came from an animal, let alone an actual animal.

I just couldn’t do it anymore. It’s like I had arrived at a completely new level of compassion for others, creatures included. It was a vibe of, “Why do I have the right to kill and consume and exploit a creature I share this planet with? I fucking DON’T.”

I also think getting my dog Scout had something to do with it to. Raising her from a tiny pile of fluff and seeing and reading about how SMART creatures like pigs are…I just stopped cold turkey. I was also living in LA which made it SUPER easy, because a LOT of my friends were vegan and there were vegan options everywhere. So I just started substituting stuff like my whey protein for vegan protein, grilled chicken for grilled tempeh and tofu, etc.

It was REALLY easy, and I’ll never go back. I’ve also never had more energy in my life. I feel like I’m aging in reverse. My skin is ridiculously clear. The list goes on. And now I don’t even live in LA anymore and I still make it work.

The bottom line is, it’s a lifestyle change that’s possible for anyone if they really want to do it. It just takes making the decision and finding replacements for the animal products you’re consuming. I’m a balls to the wall type of girl so I also stopped wearing leather products and am now fixated on cruelty-free beauty products. I also love that I’m contributing to the good of the planet as well as inspiring others to make the transition, too.

RELATIONSHIPS OUTSIDE THE INDUSTRY: IS IT POSSIBLE?

Dear Alix,

Is it difficult to sustain friendships and relationships with people outside the adult industry?

In short, no.

To elaborate: For me, it’s EXTREMELY important that I DO have friendships and relationships with people outside the adult industry.

I don’t want to box myself in to my social circle being only my colleagues. (I LOVE my colleagues and I AM friends with many of them, but what I mean here is that diversity is crucial in my world)!

My social circle is a big melting pot, and I love it that way. Surrounding myself with people who come from different backgrounds/lifestyles, have different world experiences/viewpoints, and overall have different things to bring to the table is super important to me. That’s what helps me learn and grow as a person.

On top of that, having friendships and relationships outside the business helps keep me grounded. I LOVE my life and my career, but it’s also a weird one. If you’re an artist and/or have your own business, you know what I mean when I say that life can get overwhelming and also pretty isolating if you let it. It’s REALLY easy to get consumed with your work and lose touch with everything else because it’s your baby; your passion (I’ve been there and it was NOT pretty).

It’s also odd to be so exposed to so many people and be so vulnerable all the time (once again, I LOVE it, but I also NEED my people in “real life” to bring me back down to earth). It’s nice to be able to turn my computer and my phone off and just be me at the end of the day, living my life, in REAL life.

It’s not hard at all, because they’re real relationships with real people who see me for ME, not just what I do for a living.

Ask AL: Relationships, Internet Love and COVID Life

You asked, I answered!

MONOGAMY, POLYAMORY, SWINGER…WHICH RELATIONSHIP STYLE SUITS YOU BEST?

Dear Alix,

I’m curious which relationship style you find suits you best? Like, polyamory, monogamy with the exception of work, more of a swinging style, non-monogamy? Cheers, think you’re cool!

In my world, relationship styles are very much on a case-by-case basis. In relationships in general, it’s all about communicating with your partner and what works best for you two. Everyone is different. Everyone has different preferences, everyone has different lifestyles, everyone has different expectations.

And all of that is great! Because, believe it or not, there is no one right or wrong way to do your effing life. Like, fuck society being all “You have to do it THIS SPECIFIC WAY or it’s wrong.” I don’t play that game. So it’s a conversation. It’s communicating. It’s deciding in that particular situation what’s fair to both parties. What do both parties want? How can we come to an agreement where both people are happy? All that stuff.

That said, at this point in my life (I’m 31 and have been in the adult biz since I was 22, adult film since I was 25)…I have done the swinging thing in the past, in my 20’s. That was a fun time! It was me experimenting and having fun, which I think everyone should give a whirl if they feel so inclined. I’m not a polyamory person – I think everyone should do whatever the fuck they want to do with their own lives, but that particular lifestyle just isn’t for me.

So all that said, I’m monogamous AF in relationships. I’m GOOD with just one person. Especially after doing adult entertainment for so long and seeing and experiencing ALL kinds of wild shenanigans, having gotten the craziness out of my system, ALL I want is a traditional monogamous relationship. And that’s not going to change.

The performance that you see on camera vs. intimacy in real life is like comparing apples to oranges. They’re just SO different. When I’m filming a scene, there’s no emotional connection there. It’s me working with a partner to PERFORM so that it looks phenomenal for the viewers at home. It’s like a dance of sorts. It’s sex, but it’s not the kind of fulfilling, intimate sex that I experience with someone I’m in a relationship with. Filming a scene is like going to the office and spending the day with a colleague you work well with. You collaborate with that person and work together to deliver the best product possible, and then you go home. (In my case, anyways. I’m super professional and no-nonsense, all business, in case you haven’t figured that out already! ;])

That said, I AM super open minded. Like, I’m DOWN for funsies with my real-life romantic partner. Stuff like throwing a hot woman into the mix here and there, yeah, that’s FUN AF. I’m always down to try new things. Life is meant to be lived, after all! I take my personal relationships seriously and communication is ALWAYS top priority to make sure everyone’s on the same page.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO FALL IN LOVE ON THE INTERNET?

Dear Alix,

Do you think it’s possible to fall in love with someone you are chatting with on the internet? Someone you have never met in person?

Well, I’m a firm believer in the fact that anything is possible. So yes, I believe that possibility exists. However, I feel like if I were in that position, I would be guarded to a degree with my feelings and emotions until I actually got to meet that person in real life.

It’s 2021. People are ALL up on dating sites and dating apps. It’s the new norm! Hell, even sliding into people’s DMs. I know plenty of people who have made friends – and gotten dates – doing this. With people who live in different states, and even different countries. If that’s your vibe, definitely get on the phone. Definitely get on video chat. You can gauge a connection FAR greater with someone when you’re at the very least chatting with them via video vs. typing out words from behind a computer screen.

However, I still think it’s SUPER important, ESPECIALLY when it comes to dating, that you meet the person you’re talking to in real life. Multiple times. Human to human contact cannot be replaced with computers or phones. It’s crucial.

So yes, I do believe this is possible, but I also believe in proceeding with caution and making sure your relationship isn’t JUST online before you let yourself fall hard for your cyber bae.

THE VIBE OF LIFE IN LOCKDOWN

Dear Alix,

Hi, beautiful! I’m from the UK and in lockdown at the moment. Life seems to be going so slow. How are you coping with the COVID situation?

I am doing….really good. REALLY, really good. Not a day goes by where I don’t appreciate how fortunate I am to be healthy and be able to continue working. My job has been affected, but not in a detrimental way. I just switched up the way I was doing things is all. I do miss a lot of my friends, but who doesn’t? My health is my number one priority so until then, my ass is sitting at home.

So when all this madness started up last March, just like everyone else, it forced me into a state of stillness.

I decided immediately that I wasn’t comfortable going to set anymore, so I decided that I would pivot to only filming my own scenes (which I had been doing since day one of getting into the business anyways, so not a big change there).

I also decided that I was going to make the most out of this time. I’m a firm believer in the fact that while we cannot control what happens in our lives, we CAN control how we react to it. I refused to wallow in misery over what was and have a pity party. Instead, I decided that now would be the perfect time to bring to life some projects I had been wanting to for a LONG time, but had spent so long on my hamster wheel going to and from set, so they had been on the back burner.

Which is how this blog came about, as well as my merch store (shopxoalix.com), as well as a handful of other projects that you’ll see soon. 😉

I also decided to move back to the east coast. I had been considering this for a bit, even before COVID happened. I’m a different person now at 31 than I was at 25. Nowadays all I want is a low key life, peace and quiet, nature and fresh air. None of which LA could give me.

So all of that said, ultimately I’ve just elevated into a better version of myself and continue to do so every day. If anything, this entire past year just further confirmed to me that working with what you’ve got, where you are, and showing up for yourself every single day is enough. Life has never been better. And this is possible for anyone, too. It’s really all in perspective. 😉

If you’d like your questions answered, you can email my team (and it’s totally anonymous, P.S.) at teamfantasyfactory@gmail.com, and I’ll be answering away right here as well as in my “Ask AL” series on Instagram Live.
