I’m sitting here in my home-away-from-home bedroom at a family friend’s place, where I’ve been on lockdown for over a month now, having a really good chuckle at the absolute silliness that life can bring.
Like, OK. Sometime in the near future I’m scheduled to play in a virtual “beer pong” (but without the beer) tournament on a cam site.
Super stoked on this! Like, how rad that this is literally my job?!
I had to send them a tester video of my setup and film myself throwing balls into the cups so fans who follow the contest can place bets on the winners (I made 2 out of 10 shots during this, 1 of which bounced back from my throw and landed back in my cup sooo that’s where I’m at on the skill level).
And it was the JANKIEST setup known to humankind. Like, I can’t just go do this in the public area I’m sharing with other humans – someone else’s HOME – so I made the setup in my bedroom.
Which entailed a floor-length mirror balanced on a nightstand covered in a beach towel squished between two beds.
Like I said, janky AF.
And there’s nothing I can do but laugh at the absurdity of all of this, ya know?!
But the bottom line is this: I’m making the most of what I have right where I am.
And it’s FINE. It’s OK. I don’t need to have a state-of-the-art fancy table. I don’t need to hide the fact that I’m in my bedroom. I don’t need to freak out over the fact that I have my STUFF just, like, literally everywhere in the background. Even though this event is being broadcasted to thousands of humans.
It’s all FINE.
I’m a human and I live my life and quite frankly I don’t CARE enough to pretend to look like life isn’t chaotic right now.
The old Alix would have created all this drama in her head thinking the setup was silly and would make me look foolish and amateur but current Alix knows WAY better than that. Because I’m the farthest from foolish and amateur. I’m doing my thing no matter what and that’s all that matters.
No matter what kind of task you’ve gotta accomplish, just fucking DO it. Make it happen no matter what. Honor your commitment to yourself and work with what you’ve got. Own it. The cool stuff, the silliness, the nonsense.
All of it.
Ultimately, all that REALLY matters is that you show up for yourself and do your best work with the best of intentions for yourself and others. Period.
And for me, that involves stuffing myself in a small bedroom with a jerryrigged setup that even my 21-year-old college self would have never considered.
Show up, do the work and zero fucks given. That’s the name of the game.
